(Remember) when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to place a successive (human) authority on earth.” Surah Al-Baqarah: 30

According to Islamic teachings, humans are vicegerents (khalifah) of the earth (Quran 2:30). They are thus the guardians or stewards of the earth and all of Allah's creations, and they will be accountable for their actions. Stewardship indicates both responsibility (individual and group) and a promise of abundant reward for those who protect God’s most precious creation: the earth and all its treasures.

Embracing this Stewardship Role

The role of stewardship is aligned with the intended objectives of Shariah (Maqasid Al-Shariah) as outlined by the Value Based Intermediation for Takaful (VBIT Framework), which, in essence, puts emphasis on positive value creation and avoidance of harm.
